Connect with your PEOPLE: 8 ways to give/get social support

SOCIAL SUPPORT SAVES OUR SOULS

Humans are social beings.

Without connection to each other, we feel lonely and are at risk for mental illnesses like depression. Being lonely also weakens our immune system, and can lead to a reduced lifespan.

So how do we stay connected when we have to social distance and our travel is restricted?

  1. Friends and family: connect regularly (schedule it!) with phone calls, video calls, texts, emails and letters.
  2. Thanks and praise: say thank you to everyone who does something for you, and praise them when they do it well.
  3. Be kind to yourself and others: we can never be too kind; and treating yourself with kindness means you don't feel guilty or feel like a failure if you don't cross off 'enough' items off your to-do list or don't do it to perfection
  4. Live with love: be as loving to yourself and to others, and express that love as much as possible
  5. Care without fear: don't worry about what you will get back when you show care to others
  6. Dare to share: being vulnerable takes courage, but sharing the good times and bad with people in your circle will relieve your emotional/psychological burdens.
  7. Forgive & forget: we are all doing the best that we can so don't be too demanding and forgive people when they don't meet your expectations.
  8. Connection with affection: if you live with someone else connect with touch and kindness.
